‘You’re sure?’ Lachlan paces round the hotel suite.

‘Of course,’ Mags says. ‘Why wouldn’t I be?’

‘You didn’t move it?’

‘No. I’d remember that. I woke up early. I came through and sat on the sofa, with the laptop, tried to do some research of the Guild of Falconers.’

‘And then?’

‘I left the laptop on the coffee table. Lachlan, I’m not imagining this. It’s definitely gone.’

‘Stolen?’

‘What other explanation is there?’

Lachlan nods grimly. ‘You thought I was paranoid. In the last hotel.’

‘What if it’s just a chambermaid?’ Mags tries to stay calm.

‘Oh, come on. Chambermaids don’t steal laptops. Not in this kind of hotel.’

‘Well—’

‘No.’ Lachlan paces faster, shaking his head. ‘They’ve found us.’

‘Who?’

‘I don’t know. Anderson? He recognised me in the mirror while he was driving? You were right on his tail.’

‘That doesn’t seem—’

Lachlan stops. ‘Wait. Check other stuff.’ He pulls her by the wrist into his bedroom. They open drawers, lift pillows.

‘Anything?’ Mags asks.

‘It’s all here. Let’s do your room.’

Mags’ bedroom is tidy. Housekeeping have made the bed, laid out the ornamental pillows. A heavy feeling sinks into the pit of her stomach. The bedside table is bare. She moves closer. Her stuff has been swept off the table, scattered across the floor. She kneels to check what’s missing.

‘Well?’ Lachlan asks.

‘There’s £200 in cash. It’s still here.’

‘So, nothing’s taken,’ Lachlan sounds relieved.

‘No.’ Mags’ throat tightens. ‘The picture.’

‘What picture?’

‘There was a photo. I took it out of my purse and laid it by the bed, before I went to sleep.’ She searches frantically. ‘It’s gone. It’s definitely gone. They left the money, but took the photo.’

‘What photo?’

Mags can hardly breathe. ‘My kids.’
